How to become a Coach
by Mollie Naughton posted 9/6/2022

Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a Coach! The following is a list of everything you need to do to become a Coach or Team Manager. Please remember that ALL of  the following requirements (except CEP classes) must be completed prior to the beginning of the season.

  1. Head Coaches Only: Fill out a MYH Coaching Application.  Assistant coaches are appointed by Head Coaches.

  2. Register as a member of USA Hockey.  https://www.usahockeyregistration.com/login_input.action

  3. Complete Background Check Screening (required every two years) https://www.usahockey.com/backgroundscreen

  4. Complete the USA Hockey Safe Sport Training (required every season*).     Everyone must complete Safe Sport training annually -  http://www.usahockey.com/safesporttraining

  5. Complete the online age-specific module(s) for the age level of play you are coaching.     http://www.usahockey.com/page/show/892966-age-specific-modules

  6. Find, register and attend the required CEP Clinic.  Complete CEP Clinic by December 31st (each year for levels 1-3; level 3 is two year with two online updates, each for an additional two years; levels 4 and 5 are permanent) (there is an exception for 8U and younger that you can stay at Level 1 or your current level, if higher, if you so choose)    http://www.usahockey.com/page/show/892976-coaching-clinics

2015-2016 USA Hockey Coach and Roster Requirements

There have been a number of questions on the new (for the 2015-16 season) rule for certifying rosters and coaches credentials this year.

First let me say we are here to work with our programs and the program registrars so we need to be flexible!

All coaches must have Safe Sport- It is open for anyone who needs it and there are no issues that should cause this to be a problem.

All coaches must have the proper module- According to the USA Hockey site, these will be re-opened the first week of August, so there should not be an issue here either.

All coaches must have current CEP. If a coaches CEP is current in September when the roster is submitted he is good. It may expire on Dec. 30 but that gives him time to re-certify or take the next level.

There is no cost to add or delete a coach on a non national team, so the program registrar can adjust the roster with no penalty at a later date when certification is complete.

If the coach is in the process of updating his/her credentials we can sit on the roster in the registry for a reasonable time until they do so, provided they give us notice. The date on the approved roster will be the date it was submitted not the date approved.

Otherwise the coaches must be redlined to approve the roster and the program registrar can add them back when they are up to date.

Please make sure all of your programs know this and let me know if there are any questions. I have spoken with Paul Moore about this and he is supportive of the efforts and understands our goal is not to prevent coaches from coaching…but rather to ensure they have the proper credentials going forward.
